How to install and use Supermaven in VS Code: sign up, Tab completions, chat

Install and activate Supermaven, accept your first Tab completion, then ask questions in Supermaven Chat.

To use Supermaven for inline completions and chat in VS Code, finish four jobs: install the Marketplace extension, Activate and sign in (or free tier), verify ghost text with Tab, then open Supermaven Chat in the sidebar.

Choose Use free version on the Activate prompt and complete linking at supermaven.com (email is typical). Status bar shows Free Tier when active.

Supermaven Pro

Paid Pro advertises a 1M-token context window and repository indexing (status bar may show the active repo). Chat credits or BYOK API keys per supermaven.com.

Install, sign in, completions, chat

    Install the VS Code extension

    Extensions → search Supermaven (publisher Supermaven) → Install → restart VS Code. Quick Open: ext install supermaven.supermaven.

    Activate and sign up

    Click Activate in the popup and sign in at supermaven.com, or Use free version with the emailed flow. Confirm the status bar shows Supermaven active.

    Verify Tab completions

    In a .ts or .py file type a common pattern (e.g. function fetch), pause for gray text, Tab to accept, Esc to dismiss.

    Open Supermaven Chat

    Launch Supermaven Chat from the Activity Bar, ask about the file or selection, review diffs before applying. Fix Error sends diagnostics when offered. Models and quotas follow the extension and supermaven.com.

Extension installed but no ghost text?
Finish Activate and confirm sign-in in the status bar. Check the extension is enabled and the language is supported. Tune IntelliSense priority if suggestions collide.
Chat asks for Pro or an API key?
Official docs allow Pro Chat credits or BYOK OpenAI/Anthropic keys. Free-tier Chat gating follows the extension—do not assume Pro parity.

Does this replace a whiteboard?
No. When the meeting is the module diagram, open sitdraw or read temporary meeting tools.
